President Trump is an optimist and a realist, with the utmost faith in America’s ability to excel and to win over any challenge. His enthusiasm is contagious. He’s like a cheerleader who inspires confidence in people that they can win greater achievements than ever before. The challenge America faced was how to treat and ultimately defeat the Coronavirus pandemic. Trump launched “Operation Warp Speed” to encourage American pharmaceutical companies to develop vaccines and therapeutic drugs faster than ever thought feasible. He eliminated government red tape and provided financial support so manufacturing could begin even before trials and testing were completed. The response from American private industry was fantastic. Trump’s optimism and enthusiasm paid off. We are going to have at least one vaccine available in large quantity before the end of this year.
Today, a partnership led by Pfizer signed a contract with the US Government to deliver 100,000,000 (100 million) doses of a vaccine before the end of this year as soon as their final phase three trial is successfully completed. So far, all phase one and phase two trials have been completed with outstanding results. The contract provides for the Government to get an additional 500,000,000 doses next year if it wants. These vaccines will be provided to the American population free of charge.
There are at least half a dozen other companies making great progress with vaccines and therapeutics that are being developed at phenomenal speed. What would normally take two years or longer is being accomplished in a few months thanks to the extraordinary cooperation between the federal government and private companies in the pharmaceutical industry in “Operation Warp Speed”.
President Trump cleared the way and provided the inspiration and confidence America needed to overcome the challenge of this virus. This is good leadership. The kind of leadership we need for at least four more years.
